In Heather Truett's Kiss and Repeat, a teen uses the scientific method drilled into him by his scientist father to begin a kissing experiment. Only the experiment gets messy, and Stephen will have to come clean if he wants to win one girl's heart in this heartfelt and funny YA debut.
Stephen Luckie isn't so lucky in love. He's completely inexperienced when it comes to girls, and wonders if his tics - caused by Tourette's Syndrome – are the reason.
Then a game at a party reveals that his body goes still while kissing. Using the scientific method drilled into him by his scientist father, Steven begins the best experiment ever--one that involves kissing as many girls as possible. Who knew science could be so fun?
But when the experiment gets underway, Stephen begins to question how he treats girls - and if his tics have been standing in his way at all. With two girls interested in him, he has to figure out what really matters to him and what he'll risk - and gain - by being his true self.
If Stephen were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?
I’m reading List of Ten by Halli Gomez right now, and I think Stephen and Troy should hang out. Both would be thrilled to have a friend who gets what Tourette’s is like, and I think they could learn a lot from one another’s experiences. They have plenty in common but also have totally different lives.
Troy and Stephen can add Ami from The Ballad of Ami Miles by Kristy Dallas Alley to their group. She and Stephen could compare notes on religion and the different ways it has affected their childhoods. Those three are pretty timid, all things considered, so I’d invite Clara from The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo, Liz from You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson, and Paul and CeCe from Have a Little Faith in Me by Sonia Hartl to liven things up. I bet that group could have some wild adventures, maybe driving around with Clara in the food truck or crashing Jesus camp to teach the campers about diversity of all kinds.
I’d also love to plop Stephen into a fantasy world to give him a total escape, and I think he’d be good friends with Perrin from The Wheel of Time books. Both of them are baffled by the behavior of others and both have fallen for women with strong personalities. They could pick up Renarin from the Stormlight Archive books by Brandon Sanderson. Renarin could use a few friends who get him. Add in Shill from The Awakened Kingdom by N. K. Jemison, because she’d be sure to get them into some situation they’d need to work their way out of. I also love Sal from Linsey Miller’s Mask of Shadows, so they can join the crew. Yeah, I’d read that story.
We’d need a fantasy world unfamiliar to all of them for the setting, so maybe Traci Chee’s world from The Reader or Tara Sim’s alternate Victorian world from Timekeeper. Or… I am creating a fantasy world for a book series within my next project and I could put them all there, on the Agatera Peninsula, to work out peace between the peoples of Vitera and Stelamar.
Once you’ve read Kiss and Repeat, I’d love to hear which characters YOU think Stephen should hang out with. My to-be-read list is always growing. ☺
