Kole Miller does one thing really well: write fanfiction for the show The Space Game. Everything else is a struggle: like managing her anxiety, frequent crushes, and plans after high school. But when her blog, Spacer, wins a major fanfiction contest, her traffic soars.
With massive readership comes criticism Kole isn’t prepared for, including getting stuck in the heated ship wars surrounding the show. And then an invitation to speak at The Space Game’s official convention arrives in her inbox.
When the most competitive kids in her Creative Writing class discover Kole’s writing Spacer, her blog is taken hostage and she risks them hitting ctrl+A+del on Spacer. To win it back, Kole must face both her inner demons and the ones at Crystal Lake High before they make the drama not just about The Space Game, but about Kole herself.
Including snippets from Kole’s fanfic, emails, and text messages, Down With This Ship is sure to bring out the inner fangirl in anyone.

What would you do if you spent the day with Kole? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

We would definitely binge watch THE SPACE GAME together, which is the show Kole writes her fan fiction for. There’s nothing like watching your favorite show, with one of your buddies, and eating delicious snacks while sitting on a few comfy beanbags. I’m a homebody, so this would be perfect!

If Kole were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

Definitely characters from Ashley Poston’s Geekerella. I think that Kole would go to Elle for advice about attending her first convention — she’d need to know what to wear besides her signature sweaters and long side braid, and Elle has experience with that! I also think they’d discuss the in’s and out’s of fandom in general, and the tough environment that comes with being vocal about your shows both online and in person. I know Kole would enjoy having another person to vent to besides her BFF and her brother.

What is the best fanfic you’ve ever read?

Anything and everything Bellarke (SPOILER AHEAD!). I know they’re a contentious ship, but I adore them. I read a few fics that friends wrote and they helped ease the pain of the ship not being endgame. But at least we have fan fic to help wipe our tears!

If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?

  1. My copy of Jurassic Park/The Lost World. I read it over and over again as a kid, and need to re-read it as an adult but haven’t been able to find the time — maybe in the future!
  2. The bin I keep my children’s artwork in. I LOVE looking through it again and again and seeing how they’ve grown as little artists.
  3. The picture album I made of my cats. I’m sure some of you get it and others are wondering if you read that wrong — haha!

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

I cut a scene where Hailey and Kole get into a fight while making cupcakes in their culinary class—and I had to research how to make cosmic cupcakes. Pinterest to the rescue! The cupcakes made it into the final book…and they were fun for a scene with one of the love interests (no spoilers here)! But the scene I’d written in their culinary class ended up not adding much to the story, so it hit the editing floor.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Down With This Ship?

I had to spend a few extra days on this question — it’s a hard one! I think the most fulfilling moment for me, and for Kole, is when she tells off the producer of the show she loves, THE SPACE GAME. I think many of us can relate to having a show take a direction that we didn’t anticipate or appreciate, and I loved giving her a moment to make her voice heard by a decision maker in her favorite show. I’d love to quote it, but since it happens in act three I don’t want to spoil too much!

About Katie Kingman

Katie Kingman has wanted to be a writer since freshman year when her English teacher read her story out loud. The experience was mortifying, but it led to a lifelong love of classic literature and writing fiction. She now lives, teaches, and geeks in Phoenix, Arizona, with her husband, two kids, and five cats. When not writing, she can be found gardening and scrolling Netflix for a new OTP.
