Happy Friday! Today I am participating in First Line Friday, hosted by Reading is My Superpower, AND First Lines Friday, created by Wandering Words!
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
“Hope had abandoned them to the wrath of all the waters.”
Anyone have any guesses on what book this is? I’ll give you a few clues…
any guesses yet? no? okay, one more gif…
Last chance to guess!
Today’s book is…

In the last days of the twenty-first century, sea creatures swim through the ruins of London. Trapped in the abyss, humankind wavers between fear and hope--fear of what lurks in the depths around them, and hope that they might one day find a way back to the surface.
When sixteen-year-old submersible racer Leyla McQueen is chosen to participate in the prestigious annual marathon, she sees an opportunity to save her father, who has been arrested on false charges. The Prime Minister promises the champion whatever their heart desires. But the race takes an unexpected turn, forcing Leyla to make an impossible choice.
Now she must brave unfathomable waters and defy a corrupt government determined to keep its secrets, all the while dealing with a guarded, hotheaded companion she never asked for in the first place. If Leyla fails to discover the truths at the heart of her world, or falls prey to her own fears, she risks capture--or worse. And her father will be lost to her forever.
“Hope had abandoned them to the wrath of all the waters.”
Yesterday I finished listening to The Light at the Bottom of the World by London Shah. I read (and reviewed!) an early copy of this book way back in 2019, and it was really interesting to listen to the audiobook two years later! I’m part of the blog tour for the sequel, Journey to the Heart of the Abyss, later this month, so stay tuned for that review as well!
What have you been reading lately? Let me know in the comments and have a splendiferous day!
Do you participate in either of these memes? Let me know if you do and link your posts in the comments so I can visit! And don’t forget to have a splendiferous week!
This weekend, I’m reading Night Prey by Susan Sleeman. The first line is: “Just the sight of this man curled Malone’s stomach and sent a bead of sweat down her back.” And I posted the first line from The Heart of a Cowboy by Jody Hedlund: https://daniellegrandinetti.com/2021/10/01/first-line-friday-the-heart-of-a-cowboy/
My first lines are by Jenny Knipfer and Under the Weeping Willows:
Enid June 1983
I rub my hand over my mother’s words. My throat clenches, and I hiccup, forcing back a sob. A tear lands on the lined page of the diary with a splat.
Happy reading!
