Twin brothers Jordie and Joey have never met their parents. Maybe it’s because they aren’t from this planet?
When another kid at school tried to force Jordie to show him the “crop circles” on his back that prove he’s an alien, it was Joey who took the kid to the ground. And when the twins got kicked out of their foster home because Joey kissed the other boy who lived there, it was Jordie who told him everything would be okay. And as long as Jordie and Joey are together, it will be. But when the principal calls their current foster mother about a fight at school, the boys know she’ll be done with them. And, from spying in their file, they also know they’re going to be separated.
Determined to face the world side by side rather than without one another, Jordie and Joey set off to find their birth parents. From Arizona to Roswell to Area 51 in the Nevada desert, the twins begin a search for where they truly belong. But Jordie’s about to discover that family isn’t always about the ones who bring you into the world, but the ones who help you survive it.
What would you do if you spent the day with Jordie and Joey? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
Jordie is pretty obsessed with aliens, so it would be cool to go to a lesser-known attraction for alien enthusiasts, which is a place in Arizona called Area 66. It’s a geometric dome that once served as an office building, among other things, and is now a museum dedicated to aliens and UFOs.
If Jordie and Joey were to hang out with other fictional characters, who would they be and why?
I think Jordie and Joey would enjoy hanging out with Alex from See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng. Like Jordie, Alex is obsessed with space (even though their reasons for why are different) and Alex is obviously a dog person, like Jordie and Joey are.
If there was one fictional place you could travel to for a day, where would it be and why?
So many places to choose! I’d want to live permanently at Hogwarts, but if I went somewhere that I only stayed for a day, it would be Camelot. I love everything to do with the Arthurian legend, and the world and setting are just so beautiful. But I wouldn’t want to live there forever because I’m a hot-water-shower type of girl!
If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?
Taylor Swift’s Folklore album, a photograph of my city, and an old key with no explanation for what it unlocks.
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
Oh this is such a good question! I did quite a bit of research for this book, including aliens, Area 51, and the Southwest. One of my favorite pieces I didn’t end up using was a mystery that happened in 1953. The U.S. Air Defense Command saw an unidentified object in the sky over restricted a restricted area near Lake Superior. They sent a pilot and copilot into the air to see what it was. The radar operator guided the plane to the UFO, but as soon as the dots merged on the radar, both disappeared. The only one that reappeared on the radar was the UFO, and that flew off quickly. No wreckage was ever found of the plane, and the pilot and copilot remain missing.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Jordie and Joey Fell From the Sky?
My favorite scene would have to be the first one that ever came to me when I was playing around with the idea. The darkest moments of a character’s journey always come to me first, and I build the book around that scene. It’s a pivotal moment, when Jordie learns the truth about where he’s from. In that moment, he realizes people build all kinds of families, especially when you don’t have what most consider normal.
