In this sweet and funny new f/f romance from the author of Cool for the Summer, a cheerleader and the school's newest quarterback are playing to win, but might lose their hearts in the process.
Amber McCloud’s dream is to become cheer captain at the end of the year, but it’s an extra-tall order to be joyful and spirited when the quarterback of your team has been killed in a car accident. For both the team and the squad, watching Robbie get replaced by newcomer Jack Walsh is brutal. And when it turns out Jack is actually short for Jaclyn, all hell breaks loose.
The players refuse to be led by a girl, the cheerleaders are mad about the changes to their traditions, and the fact that Robbie’s been not only replaced but outshined by a QB who wears a sports bra has more than a few Atherton Alligators in a rage. Amber tries for some semblance of unity, but it quickly becomes clear that she's only got a future on the squad and with her friends if she helps them take Jack down.
Just one problem: Amber and Jack are falling for each other, and if Amber can't stand up for Jack and figure out how to get everyone to fall in line, her dream may come at the cost of her heart.

What would you do if you spent the day with Amber and Jack? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
Amber and Jack live in a small town where every spot is basically The Landmark Spot, so I’d definitely hit up all the same places they do in the book—Maggie’s Diner, Drip (which is really Amber and Miguel’s place, but I don’t think he’d mind), and, of course, Gutter Kittens. A road trip to the beach would definitely be nice, too!
If Amber and Jack were to hang out with other fictional characters, who would they be and why?
I feel like Amber and Jack would be really good couple friends with both Morgan and Ruby from Some Girls Do by Jennifer Dugan and Liz and Mack from Leah Johnson’s You Should See Me in a Crown, and Jack would definitely have a lot to commiserate about with Mara from Britta Lundin’s Like Other Girls! Amber really appreciates the sisterhood of cheerleaders, so I think she’d particularly love Hermione and Polly and from E.K. Johnston’s Exit, Pursued Like a Bear, and of course, when they’re looking to bond with another Sapphic cheerleader/ball player couple, they’d definitely chill with Scottie and Irene from Kelly Quindlen’s She Drives Me Crazy.
If there was one fictional place you could travel to for a day, where would it be and why?
I am in awe of Marie Rutkoski’s world building in the Winner’s Curse trilogy, and I would love a day to just travel all over those lands to see them in person and how they match up to the vivid pictures she’s drawn in my head.
If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?
Definitely one of my books—probably That Way Madness Lies, because I like the idea of it representing literature and authorship through the ages. Probably one of my older kid’s stuffed pandas, because at this age he wouldn’t miss one and I love the idea of having my family together in that way even when it’s dug up. And to represent the now, probably an iPhone. But not my iPhone. I desperately need that.
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
I really wanted to do so much more with cheerleading than I got to. I don’t think there was any specific item I wanted to include that didn’t make it in, but I really love great depictions of the complexity and athleticism of cheerleading and I did so much reading on it and ultimately I just couldn’t fit any more in.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Home Field Advantage?
There’s a really fun scene of queer solidarity in the form of a double date at a ridiculous bowling alley, and it was just a delight for me to write. I love the foursome in it, I love the night of freedom they get to have in a city that otherwise feels so restrictive to them, I love that all these athletes are bringing their skills and competition to something else, and it was just a really fun scene to set. If I could draw, I would definitely draw a scene from it!
