A laugh-out-loud funny and whip-smart romantic comedy from the author of The Shaadi Set-Up, about a young woman who takes the place of her celebrity doppelgänger, and must fake-date the actress’s sexy costar boyfriend.
Writer Freya Lal has a huge secret: she’s a dead ringer for It-girl actress Mandi Roy. Her second novel is due in a month, but inspiration is nowhere to be found. Desperate to shake off her writer’s block, Freya leans into her look-alike abilities and indulges in some mistaken identity for simple perks, like scoring a free mimosa or getting into a trendy nightclub.
Actor Taft Bamber appears to have it all: gorgeous, talented, and Mandi’s love interest both on- and off-screen. But what nobody knows is that their relationship is a PR stunt, and after years of playing make-believe, he’s yearning for something real.
When Freya’s latest impersonation of Mandi goes viral thanks to Taft’s accidental interference, rumors of a breakup threaten Hollywood’s golden couple. To make amends, Freya is forced to give Mandi a little time off: she’ll pretend to be the actress for a month, move in with Taft, and squash the rumors by acting completely in love. But as Freya and Taft play house, it becomes impossible to ignore that their instant chemistry isn’t just for the cameras. While faking it, they might have just found the real thing.
What would you do if you spent the day with Freya and Taft? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I would love to spend the day visiting Books & Brambles with them! They’d know all the best bookshops and places to eat in LA – though I wouldn’t say no to some of Taft’s cooking!
If Freya and Taft were to hang out with other fictional characters, who would they be and why?
I would love to be a fly on the wall during a conversation between Freya, Taft, and Emily Henry’s Nora and Charlie!
If there was one fictional place you could travel to for a day, where would it be and why?
The wintry small town of my next Adult romance 😉 It is SO incredibly charming, I can’t wait to share it!
If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?
Probably three first drafts on a flashdrive! It’s funny, because I’ve spoken in the past about how I consider each of my books (and by extension each draft) a time capsule of who I was as a person and a writer in that short sliver of time. You can find many of my obsessions and interests tucked away between the pages. Although I suppose writers have no need to bury these relics away when we can just upload them to the cloud!
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
Briefly, I was going to give Freya a hobby of making clay pins to sell in Books & Brambles as merch! I loved watching the YouTube tutorials but in the end it cluttered up the storyline too much. Saving it for a future book!
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from The Decoy Girlfriend?
I have way too many favorite quotes! I think one of my top favorites has got to be:
“There is no greater magic in all the universes combined than someone who builds a home for you in their heart.”
I think this is super apropos, as not only do Freya and Taft become each other’s home, but I think the concept of home as a person is something I’m drawn to a lot.
What do you think about The Decoy Girlfriend? Have you added it to your tbr yet? Let me know in the comments and have a splendiferous day!
