Devon Marsh is haunted by secrets. Like the identity of the person who killed her twin sister, Emily, in a hit and run accident last Halloween, which Devon has vowed to uncover. Like the things Devon said to Emily just before she died.
But she’s determined to start fresh when she boards a four-hour flight along with her classmates for their senior class ski trip. Devon never could have guessed those secrets would surface in the most terrifying way when a supernatural creature hijacks their flight and gives the students a deadly ultimatum:
Choose one among them to sacrifice before the end of the flight. Or the plane will crash.
As the clock ticks down, the creature slowly unearths the passengers’ deepest, darkest secrets—and reveals that one of the teens on the plane is responsible for Emily’s death. The students must agree on a sacrifice, or there won’t be any survivors. But can Devon find a way to stop the creature, or will she give in to her anger and let revenge take control?

What would you do if you spent the day with Devon? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

I would ask her to teach me how to play the drums. For me, there is nothing cooler than a girl drummer, so I would want to hang out and learn how to be one. At heart, she’s a wild child with a big heart, so I think we would go to a restaurant/bar for cheeseburgers after I went to one of her rock concerts and then we might take a midnight walk with her band. 

If Devon were to hang out with other fictional characters, who would they be and why?

She would probably hang out with Daisy from Daisy Jones and the Six, but also someone like Jake Livingston from The Taking of Jake Livingston. She loves music and dreams of making it big someday with her band, so Daisy would be a kindred spirit. Jake would be someone she could relate to because both have had experiences with evil that wants to possess people and ghosts, so they would have a lot to commiserate about!

If there was one fictional place you could travel to for a day, where would it be and why?

This is tough because there are quite a few I’d like to visit, but I have to pick Narnia for my younger self. I would want to go through the wardrobe and have tea with Mr. Tumnus and live an entire lifetime in that world—which I could technically do because I’d return the same time that I left. It’s always been my childhood wish. I sat in many closets when I was little wishing so hard that the back wall would turn into a portal to Narnia.  

If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?

1. My first published book because it represents the start of me living out my dream as a writer. 
2. A photo of my family and I on one of our travels because it would represent the people who I love best doing the thing we love most.
3. My laptop because it contains all my other stories and photos and basically most of my life!

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

There really wasn’t any research I didn’t use in this book! But my favorite bit of research that I really had fun with was the secret crew bunk room that exists on long haul planes. On overseas flights some planes have bunk rooms for their crew to get rest in. They are located either above or below the main cabin. I thought it was such a cool thing! I’d love to be able to go inside one for real, but some flight crew have posted videos of them on Tik Tok, so you can see what they look like. I watched a lot of those. A close second for favorites was learning what could be used as a potential weapon on the plane. Let’s just say, the ice hammer the crew use to break up ice plays a part in this story, lol.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Flight 171?

My favorite scenes are actually the creepiest ones in the book and involve things I can’t say so I don’t give anything away. But if I had to pick a non-spoilery scene it would be when Devon spends some time with her pilot mom in the secret crew bunk. There are some touching memories shared there that I enjoyed writing. It shows Devon in a more vulnerable light, gives you a sense of who she is and what her family is like.
