When Amy, on her way to becoming valedictorian of her graduating class and getting accepted to her dream school, gets dumped by her long-term boyfriend, she takes a job at a record store to ease the pain. She needs a distraction, badly.
Oliver, Amy’s record store co-worker, isn’t so sure about Amy—his complete opposite—but what he is sure of is his decision not to go to college. He just can’t figure out how to tell his mother.
As they work late-night shifts at the record store, Amy and Oliver become friends and then confidantes and then something more, but when Amy has a hard time letting go of what she thought was her perfect future with her ex, she risks losing the future she didn’t even know she wanted with Oliver.
If you could trade lives with any YA character for a day, who would it be and why?
Probably Hermione Granger. I really love how fierce and smart and powerful she is, and I wouldn’t mind being all of those things for a day or longer. Plus, I’ve always had a bit of a thing for Ron.
What would you do if you spent the day with Amy and Oliver? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I would love to a concert with Amy and Oliver. I think they would really understand how excited and passionate I get in the face of live music. And then we could hang out at the café and talk music while we eat greasy burgers and fries.
If Amy and Oliver were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?
I want to put Amy and Oliver in a room with the band boys from Sarah Dessen’s This Lullaby and maybe Owen from Just Listen. I think they could all talk music from different perspectives, and it would be a great time.
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
One of my best friends has a degree in jazz piano and is a huge jazz enthusiast. When I was first writing the book, I had a very big chapter about jazz, and I had my friend sit down with me to talk about the history of the genre. He must have gone on for an hour about jazz, and I felt awful when I ended up cutting the whole thing but also kind of relieved because jazz is just so not for me.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from All Our Worst Ideas?
I feel like my favorite moment would be a huge spoiler, so I’ll go with second favorite. Very early on, when they’re still getting to know each other, Amy discovers that Oliver has a tattoo and that the two of them share a favorite band. That moment, when Oliver is a little dumbstruck that he has something in common with Amy and that he might actually want to be friends with her, is such a good moment to me and one of the very first that I wrote.
Were there alternate endings you considered, or did you always know where the story was headed?
The thing about All Our Worst Ideas is that one of the major plotlines in the book centers around whether or not Amy makes valedictorian. The whole time I was writing the book, I had no idea if she was going to get it or not. I didn’t find out until Amy did, which was mildly stressful!
