Cara DeLeon is a woman lost in time. She’s stuck at a job she hates in a city she wants to escape. When tragedy strikes on a subway train, Cara awakens to find herself in the future, but not the one she dreamed of. Her old life is a distant memory and nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a future on the brink of war, she must learn how to navigate this strange new universe.
Commander of the Confederation Fleet Nikolas Caine is a man haunted by past sins as he defends the star system he has dedicated his life to protect. His ship is attacked by space raiders called Hostiles and Cara is discovered on board. Her arrival sets into motion a chain of events that will change his world forever.
Cara uncovers dark secrets that threaten to tear the star system apart and endanger her life. She must fight to survive if she wants to get home to her family. Battling a looming war and his growing feelings for Cara, Caine must finish his mission. Of course, Cara would end up falling for the one man dead set on sending her home. As the ghosts of his past catch up to Caine, Cara finds herself struggling to face her future.

If you could trade lives with any book character for a day, who would it be and why? What about a week? A month, year, or forever?

I would want to trade lives with Cara. As a kid I was definitely a dreamer and I loved astronomy. It was my favorite class in high school and college. I grew up watching Star Trek, the Star Wars movies and I was a massive Firefly fan when that came out. I always wished I could have some grand space adventure in a faraway galaxy like the characters in those shows and movies. I would want to trade lives with her for a couple of years because in the long run, I am very happy with my life here on Earth. There are no horses on a spaceship. Although, it would be incredibly difficult to say no to a life with Caine. Shhh. Don’t tell my husband!

What would you do if you spent the day with Cara and Caine? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?

I would want Cara and Caine to give me the full tour of The Archon. I want to see the library, the observation room. I want to have a cup of haldi with Zora and crack jokes with Than. If I had more than a day I would want to snack on a koloxi on Arctus and visit a border planet, but space is big and it takes a while to travel from planet to planet.

If Cara and Caine were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?

Caine and Cara would probably hang out with Jelena from Lindsay Buroker’s Sky Full of Stars Series. But, I can also see them both getting along with the Jedi from Star Wars. I feel like Cara and Leia would be best friends. Caine and Obi Wan would be an epic pairing if they could spend some time together, discussing politics and governance. And Than and Han Solo would be one endless conversation full of snarky one-liners and witty banter.

What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Cut Her Out in Little Stars?

How do I pick just one? Any scene with Than in it was so much fun to write. Than is equally a smart-alec but also keeps Caine grounded in reality. I loved writing the scene where Cara first discovers she is in space. That isn’t too much of a spoiler, I hope. Also the simmering tension and brewing romance between Caine and Cara is always something that makes me smile. I enjoyed watching Caine’s well built walls around his heart slowly disintegrate. The name of the book came from the Shakespeare quote but originally I had a different working title and a different quote by Shakespeare that didn’t connect with the name of the book at all. When I revamped the book, (see the question below) I also wanted to change the title because I wasn’t completely satisfied with it. I searched for other Shakespeare quotes and happened upon that one. It fit perfectly and that became an iconic scene since it connected with the title.

What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?

I did a lot of research into aliens and alien species but decided I didn’t want humanoid aliens in my universe. It was really fun to research what true aliens might look like based on the environments of other planets. People tend to think of little green men but it is more likely that aliens wouldn’t resemble humans at all if they lived on planets with extreme conditions. I tried to make my universe as realistic as possible and the likelihood of humans finding life just by travelling to a different star system in our galaxy is very slim. The universe is massive beyond all comprehension and within our own galaxy I wanted this future star system to be based on where our current scientific knowledge might be at that time. The Confederation, the government in C.H.O.I.L.S. is not like the one in Star Trek. They aren’t boldly going anywhere outside their own star system. They are more concerned with taking care of what they have and not putting the funding into going beyond the furthest planet they claim as their own. So, in their reality, they probably haven’t discovered aliens yet.

Were there alternate endings you considered, or did you always know where the story was headed?

I originally had a completely different ending. I got some amazing feedback from a reader and I rewrote the last six or seven chapters. I was so much happier after changing it. It felt right after that. My original ending was okay but I wasn’t thrilled with it. Once she read the book and told me her thoughts, it sparked the new ending that was published. I don’t want to say too much because, well, spoilers.

Daniele Kasper’s travels have taken her around the world and back again, but her favorite adventures will always be found between the covers of a good book. From rescuing dolphins in the Florida Keys, to getting chased by grizzly bears in Alaska, Daniele has taken her adventures and used them as inspiration for her writing. Eventually, she married a horse trainer and settled down in central Michigan. She is now a farm girl with her husband, The Cowboy. They have four rescue dogs, a multitude of cats and chickens and a couple of cowponies. Daniele loves reading and writing fantasy and science fiction. She also loves all things Outlander and Disney, can’t grow a garden to save her life and occasionally moonlights as an elementary teacher.
