It's too late for a Sweet Sixteen but what if Mahalia had a Coming Out Party? A love letter to romantic comedies, sweet sixteen blowouts, black joy and queer pride.
Mahalia Harris wants.
She wants a big Sweet Sixteen like her best friend Naomi. She wants the super cute new girl Siobhan to like her back. She wants a break from worrying--about money, snide remarks from white classmates, pitying looks from church ladies . . . all of it.
Then inspiration strikes: It's too late for a Sweet Sixteen, but what if she had a Coming Out Party? A singing, dancing, rainbow-cake-eating celebration of queerness on her own terms.
The idea lights a fire in her, and soon Mahalia is scrimping and saving, taking on extra hours at her afterschool job, trying on dresses, and awkwardly flirting with Siobhan, all in preparation for the Coming Out of her dreams. But it's not long before she's buried in a mountain of bills, unfinished schoolwork, and enough drama to make her English Lit teacher blush. With all the responsibility on her shoulders, will Mahalia's party be over before it's even begun?
A novel about finding yourself, falling in love, and celebrating what makes you you.
What would you do if you spent the day with Mahalia? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
Oh man! I’d really want to see her neighborhood because I’ve never been to the west coast. I’d want to go to her favorite burger place that she goes to with Siobhan and her local beach. I’m also a fan of drives, so I think it would be fun to go on a drive with her while listening to one of her playlists.
If Mahalia were to hang out with other fictional characters, who would they be and why?
I feel like she’d probably get along with Kat and Patrick from 10 Things I Hate About You. They’re definitely more outspoken about being outcasts than Mahalia is, but I think they’d enjoy each other, and would make a great band.
If there was one fictional place you could travel to for a day, where would it be and why?
The kingdom from Ella Enchanted. I feel like Ella would be a very good ruler and also a good host.
If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?
Probably my laptop, a poster for a favorite movie – I can’t decide which one, but maybe Moonstruck – and one of my books. I’m attached to my laptop, love movies, and I would want to see my reaction to my work in the future.
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
I didn’t really do any research for this book, but I liked doing different versions of the playlist that my character creates throughout the book and sampling all of the music!
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Friday I’m in Love?
The scene in the auditorium!
