If you could trade lives with any book character for a day, who would it be and why? What about a week? A month, year, or forever?
If it was just a day then I’d like to trade places with Elizabeth Bennett. I’ve always been a Jane Austen fan, and I think it would be so interesting and fun to experience a true day in the life of Elizabeth. (If possible, she’s with Mr. Darcy, lol!) But I don’t think I could make it for more than a day though—I need all of our modern day conveniences!
For longer than that, I think I’d trade lives with Cimorene from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (an older MG fantasy series). I loved that series growing up and her life would be exciting without having too much drama!
What would you do if you spent the day with Ellie? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I would love to spend the day with Ellie! I’d definitely want to be in England together and I think our first stop would be the Kew Botanical Gardens. I have a feeling we could both spend a lot of time there! She didn’t get to do much shopping when she was in London so we could spend time there going to bookstores and searching for Cicely Mary Barker fairy figurines. And a day together wouldn’t be complete without afternoon tea!
If Ellie were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?
I’d love for her to hang out with Anna, Étienne, Isla, and Josh from Anna and the French Kiss and Isla and the Happily Ever After. I have a feeling Ellie would get along well with them and they could do more traveling around Europe together. ☺
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
Okay, this is kind of weird, but at one point I thought I might have Ellie do a project on Chernobyl for school. I had watched the Chernobyl miniseries on HBO and went down a rabbit hole of reading more about it. It is an unbelievable tragedy, but I also found it fascinating. Ultimately, I decided it wasn’t the right choice for the book though.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Hot British Boyfriend?
I have a lot of favorite scenes, but one is definitely the conversation between Sage and Ellie where Sage reveals she sold her extra condoms, given to her by her mom, to get money to buy earrings. I was laughing as I wrote it and it still makes me smile every time I read it.
Were there alternate endings you considered, or did you always know where the story was headed?
From the very first spark of an idea, I always knew that View Spoiler » Some of the details shifted around, but the general ending never changed…which made writing it a bit easier. 😉
