What would you do if you spent the day with Altan and Ahn? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
First of all, I’d probably need to stop them from bickering and debating about what to do. Assuming that I’ll be spending the day with them in our modern world, I’m pretty sure Ahn would want to try all the new food in the neighborhood – if there’s a Ding Tai Fung nearby, she would totally want to go there for some soup dumplings (xiao long bao). After which, we would have bubble tea! And honestly, we’ll probably be dragging Altan everywhere and he’ll act like he’s unhappy but is probably fine. He’s there to hold our shopping bags, and we can bring him to the bookstore as a treat. Haha.
If Altan and Ahn were to hang out with characters from other books, who would they be and why?
Genie and Quentin from The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee. I feel like they would get along. Altan and Quentin would stand by the side, sighing exasperatedly at the girls. In the meantime, the girls would be like:
Ahn: I have this really cool sword
Genie: I’m kind of like a really cool sword
This a little weird, but in my head, I feel like Ahn (and Tang Wei, a side character from Jade Fire Gold) would also hang out with Cardan from The Cruel Prince and ask him annoying questions about his tail just to irritate him LOL.
If there was one fictional place you could travel to for a day, where would it be and why?
London Below in the novel Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I really enjoyed this book when I read it years ago, and Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. I’m fascinated by hidden places and worlds and magic in seemingly mundane everyday life. I also enjoy books where authors take what we’re familiar with and add a twist or turn it upside down. Gaiman is great at this!
If you buried a time capsule with three items inside, what three items would you choose and why?
- The 3 albums from BTS’ HYYH era as well as the accompanying notes. To me, this era in BTS discography captures the experiences of youth and adolescence perfectly, and it’s relatable. Perhaps those in the future might like it.
- A copy of Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry because it’s one of my favorite books and in my opinion, the story is timeless.
- A newspaper headline that’s full of positivity and hope. Just to show those in the future that humanity in the past wasn’t always bad, and maybe it’ll bring some hope to them if they need it.
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
I did some research on the traveling speed of camels and horses on different terrains for logistical purposes to map out the distances between towns and places in the story world. It was also to give me an idea of how long the characters take to travel from one place to another. There was too much math and it bogged down the story and timeline if I wanted to be super precise and accurate, so in the end I estimated and handwaved it.
