When children go missing in the small coastal town of Astoria, people look to Wendy for answers.
It's been five years since Wendy and her two brothers went missing in the woods, but when the town’s children start to disappear, the questions surrounding her brothers’ mysterious circumstances are brought back into light. Attempting to flee her past, Wendy almost runs over an unconscious boy lying in the middle of the road, and gets pulled into the mystery haunting the town.
Peter, a boy she thought lived only in her stories, claims that if they don't do something, the missing children will meet the same fate as her brothers. In order to find them and rescue the missing kids, Wendy must confront what's waiting for her in the woods.
What would you do if you spent the day with Wendy? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I think we would hang out in downtown Astoria, OR! Astoria is one of my favorite places. It’s a small coastal town in northern Oregon and it’s got some really great restaurants, which I mention in “Lost in the Never Woods”. Since I’m on deadline right now and Wendy is just generally anxious and stressed, I think we could both use a day of walking along the water, grabbing Dutch Bros and then getting french fries and earl gray ice cream from Frite and Scoop!
If wendy were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?
Honestly, I think hanging out with Yadriel and Maritza would do her some good! Yadriel is such a gentle soul who cares so much about people, that I think he’d be a really good friend for Wendy. Meanwhile, Maritza would be super protective of Wendy and having a fiercely protective friend is always a good thing haha I also think Maritza would help her break out of her shell a bit.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from lost in the never woods?
One of my favorite scenes in ”Lost in the Never Woods” is when Wendy and Peter find a waterfall while they’re searching the woods! It nearly didn’t make it into the book/ I was on my last round of editorial edits and my editor actually asked me to cut out a few thousand words. Instead, I came up with this waterfall scene that I thought created a good break in the tension/darkness of the story. I ended up adding a couple thousand words instead of cutting, but luckily my editor liked it!
Would you rather be a superhero or a supervillain? And what would your powers and name be?
Definitely a superhero! For the longest time I always wanted to be able to communicate and summon the dead (mostly because I love ghosts but I’ve never had a paranormal experience!) but after being stuck in a pandemic for over a year, I would really love to be able to teleport to anywhere that isn’t my 500 sqft apartment! As for a superhero name, it would probably be something ridiculous like Captain Himbo haha.
