After eight long years, Evadne will finally be reunited with her older sister, Halcyon, who has been proudly serving in the queen’s army. But when Halcyon appears earlier than expected, Eva knows something has gone terribly wrong. Halcyon is on the run, hunted by her commander and charged with murder.
Though Halcyon’s life is spared during her trial, the punishment is heavy. And when Eva volunteers to serve part of Halcyon’s sentence, she’s determined to find out exactly what happened. But as Eva begins her sentence, she quickly learns that there are fates much worse than death.
If you could trade lives with any YA character for a day, who would it be and why? What about a week? A month, year, or forever?
This is such a fun question!
For a day— Celia from The Night Circus. I would love to spend a night at the circus performing!
For a week— Dare I say Jude from The Cruel Prince? It would kind of be scary to be in Elfhame…but I can’t resist, either.
For a month—Lucy from The Chronicles of Narnia (although we know time runs differently between the two worlds!).
What would you do if you spent the day with Eva and Halcyon? Where would you go to eat, hang out, relax, etc.?
I would take them out to pizza at a local restaurant. Then we would swing by a bookstore, so Evadne could peruse all the books, before I took both sisters to the ocean. I could see Evadne loving a day at the beach, reading on the sand, while Halcyon learned how to surf.
If Eva and Halcyon were to hang out with characters from other YA books, who would they be and why?
I think they would love to meet Scarlett and Tella from Caraval. Eva and Halcyon would be excited to explore the dangerous and glittering world of Caraval with the other two sisters.
What was your favorite bit of research you ended up not using?
I did quite a bit of research for this book, and I feel like I ended up using most of it (which is so nice and very often not the case. Usually I do tons of research and end up not using all of it). But my favorite for Sisters of Sword & Song include researching hoplite armor and battle tactics, textiles and fashion, and the process of olive pressing. I found a great YouTube video of an ancient olive press still in use today, and I loved it because it felt like I was there, experiencing the process. One day I hope to be able to travel to Greece and experience it in person.
What is your favorite quote, scene, or moment from Sisters of Sword and Song?
Chapter XX was my favorite to write. It’s a chapter that includes both Halcyon’s and Evadne’s perspectives, and I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a pretty intense chapter—physically and emotionally. And while there is distance between the sisters, they find a connection to each other. I remember how the words just poured out of me when I was writing this sequence.
Can you share some things that we might not know about your characters?
Here’s a little insight into their personalities: Evadne is a Type 4 on the Enneagram Personality Test. Halcyon is a Type 8 on the Enneagram Personality Test.
